All maps of the world are erroneous, these sensationalists just took one type of projection, the cylindrical equal-area projection and pointed out an error that to some degree is present on all maps. It is impossible to create a 2D projection of a sphere without some distortion. Equal area projections simply seek to preserve, as best as possible, the relative area of each landmass. The projection provided below is actually rather accurate, they just intend for you to compare all of North America to Africa rather than just the continental US. I hate the media
