All parents want their kids to feel like they have a group of friends where they fit in and are accepted for who they are. When you have a child with a diagnosis, this dream for your child can seem to diminish sometimes. Karrie joined the choir at school when she was in middle school. She was thrilled because she became a choir kid. She had new friends to sit at the table with at lunch. She has friends who she still talk with when she sees them. She went on a choir field trip and I chaperoned. I had thought it would be Karrie and I just hanging out together while all the other kids took off to enjoy the theme park. Karrie had other ideas. She had a group of 4 friends and she was gone! I didnt see her for several hours. When she came back, she was glowing. The other girls said they (all of them, even Karrie) rode every roller coaster in the place. There was no patronizing Karrie...they accepted her as one of them. Karrie bloomed a little more that day. Its wonderful to feel accepted!
