All right. Heres what happened. When I learned of a church that was considering electing as a deacon a man who had been married 4 or 5 times--and even listed him among those meeting the biblical standards--I posted it here and simply said, I am aghast. Honestly, gang, I had no idea I was throwing dynamite into a prayer gathering. And, the reason Ive not weighed in on the discussion is Ive been preaching out of town, and have logged 600+ miles on my car this weekend in the process. When I turned on my phone to see comments, the first time someone slammed me for such a hateful post, I turned it off. When Im getting ready to preach, I dont want anyone messing with my mind. -- When a FB friend messaged to ask why I posted such a thing, I simply said I thought it was obvious. Clearly it wasnt. So here goes: A) I thought there were biblical standards for deacons. B) I thought even divorced people would think that if a guy is married and divorced 4 or 5 times, theres gotta be some character flaw here that disqualifies him for spiritual leadership. C) I thought surely no sane person would think I was slamming divorced people. D) And once again, I was wrong on all these things. I was not trying to stir up a discussion, but merely to register my disgust. I am far more disgusted now than before. -- Ill leave this up for an hour, then erase everything.
