All security agencies at Kenyan airports have been placed under the Kenya Airports Police Unit commandant and Mr Joseph ole Tito appointed to the position. This follows a directive by President Kenyatta that the various agencies be placed “under the command of a single senior officer.” The agencies include Directorate of Criminal Investigations, Anti-narcotics and Anti-terrorism units, National Intelligence Service and the Kenya Wildlife Service. Kenya Airports Authority also has a security branch as well as other units of the police including the CID, regular police and the GSU. The President ordered the restructuring after a huge fire damaged the international arrivals section at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport last Wednesday. Mr Tito was a traffic commandant before he was transferred to head the police in Nyanza as the Provincial Police Officer, a title that has since been scrapped following appointment of county commanders. The reorganization is expected to restore KAPU to its former glory when it was one of the elite police units in the 80s.
