All this saber rattling about the supposed incursion of China into Vietnamese Sovereignty has lead me to actually do a bit of research about The Paracel Islands. What I found was that since the early 1950s the northern most chain of these islands have firmly been in control of China and since 1974 the entire Parcel Island chain has been under Chinese control. The only entity which seems to have made any claim to those Islands was the former Republic of South Vietnam, a country which no longer exists. The islands sit some 120 miles from Vietnam and 140 from mainland China thus giving both countries equal claim to the Islands falling into their EEZ (Exclusive Economic Zone). From a non biased factual standpoint it would appear that China has a pretty clear case and Vietnam does not....
