All universities in bengal including JU always were politically - TopicsExpress

All universities in bengal including JU always were politically controlled especially VC appointments. JU however always prospered due to the bright crop of students and some very good professors. I still think 4 years in JU-ME were the best spent time of my career. We had so much passion and enthusiasm (sometimes wrongly placed). If however we could get rid of political parties from butting in, we could have scaled new heights in research and education. Infact there was a point in 2004, when JU was considered to become an IIT. I almost made up my mind to come back to JU if that transition happened back in 2007. Alas it failed. Infact the latest proposal to convert JU to central university was also shelved. There are reasons how it could have helped JU if central or IIT status were conferred. It would have meant less local politics, no more control of EC and other decision making bodies. It also could have geared up substantial increase in funds and many people (who join IITs after PhD) could have come here in large numbers. Overall the standard of JU would have improved. Some months back during a PhD interview session our Chairman Prof. R. Narasimhan (a decorated academician) made a comment (after evaluating an applicant from JU) that according to him JU students are the most prolific UGs he has encountered in his career. They are well taught and very bright in their creative approach. I just felt so proud to hear this. I hope recent incidents do not dent that aura in any perceivable way. It is also important to have a very accomplished academician as VC (last JU VC was an excellent recruitment for a change). Infact all IITs and IISc have great minds as their directors. It just helps to build the image of any institute. Accomplishments cannot be earned politically, they are earned through sweat and merit. Hope JU follows that path.
