All your money spent since the weekend??? Nothing left to go out - TopicsExpress

All your money spent since the weekend??? Nothing left to go out with during the week??? Cian Harrington reviews a film on Netflix that might, just might make staying in that little bit less depressing!!! Film: Jerry Maguire (1996) Director: Cameron Crowe Starring: Tom Cruise, Renee Zellwegger, Cuba Gooding Jnr. and Jonathon Lipnicki. Tom Cruise… What does that name mean to you?? For our generation it probably means that has been, maybe?? Maybe that crazy guy who jumped on Opera’s couch, I don’t know maybe that old guy who used to be hot?? Or no, Scientology, that’s it, that’s what he means to our generation. Well guys, to the generation that was just before ours Tom Cruise was a superstar. Before Leo was nominated 5 times and didn’t win, Cruise was nominated 3 times and didn’t win. Yes I’m comparing Leo DiCaprio to Tom Cruise and this might come as a shock. But Tom Cruise along with Brad Pitt, it has to be said are the most under ratted actors of their generation, and why, because they were better looking then everybody else!!! Nobody ever gave them the credit that they deserve because, “sure they were only in that to look nice”. Even before Cruise became Ethan Hunt and the all out action hero he is today, he proved his acting choppers in dramas such as Oliver Stone’s Born on the Fourth of July, the outstanding A Few Good Men and of course Rain Man. However it wasn’t until 1996’s Jerry Maguire that Cruise gave his Arc de Triomphe (speller) of performances. Cruise plays the title character in one of the funniest; most heart warming sports dramas ever to be made. Penned and directed by the under used and again underrated Cameron Crowe (who would later re-team with Cruise for the thriller Vanilla Sky) Jerry Maguire is a modern day masterpiece. Focusing on the greed infested world of sports agents, agent Jerry Maguire leaves his firm having written a mission statement, that well, shocks his collogues, “He wants less money and less clients!!!!! How are we sposed to get rich like that”. Out on his own Maguire is left with just one client, the hyperactive, temperamental, “quan” loving Rod Tidwell. With just one client Jerry Maguire goes on a journey of self-discovery in a film that is touching, as it is funny. Cruise in the lead performance is the star in what was Renee Zellwegger aka Bridget Jones’ breakout performance. While another aspiring young star, Cuba Gooding Jnr steals the show as Rod Tidwell, the hot head American Footballer hell bent on getting a contract that will see out his playing days. If you haven’t seen it, you need to watch this. You will laugh, cry and laugh some more. And if anything you need to see Cruise in his pomp. An actor at the height of his powers, who should in my opinion have won an Oscar for the roll. So lads, staying in over the week, you could do a lot worse then take in a bit of forgotten cinema history. And of course keep an eye out for 5 year old Jonathon Lipnicki as Ray “Do you know the human head weighs five pounds” Boyd. Enjoy.
