Allahabad high court directs UP government to withdraw security to unauthorized VIPsNov 8, 2013, 11.17AM IST TNN[Swati Mathur] LUCKNOW: A counter affidavit filed by the Uttar Pradesh government says there are close to 830 unauthorized people who get a security cover from the government. Out of these, 170 have been given this security free of cost and without and clear, perceptible threat. Many unauthorized VIPs who avail of the services against a payment have also, in fact, refused to pay up, and the government has failed to recover Rs 1.83 crore from them, so far. Many unauthorised VIPs have got the security cover even without the approval of the district security committee. This means they have been provided the security cover without any assessment of the kind of threat perception there is, if at all. The UP government filed this information in response to the hearing of a PIL filed by social activist Nutan Thakur in the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad HC. The court ordered that security provided to all unauthorised people be withdrawn immediately. It also ordered that the dues payable for this security be recovered within 15 days. In its counter affidavit, the state government admitted that currently 830 persons beyond the authorised list have been awarded security by the UP government. Out of these unauthorised persons, 170 have been awarded security free of cost while 650 have been awarded security on payment. According to the affidavit, the total expenditure on these persons beyond the authorised list comes to Rs 4.83 crore. Of this, Rs 3 crore has been recovered while dues of Rs 1.83 crore are still pending. The state government has been directed to file reply and the next date of hearing has been fixed for December 2.
