Allergy policies in schools irritate me. I entirely get parents desires to safeguard their kids and some childrens allergic reactions are rather extreme. But allergies arent a common danger to children like a tiger. If a tiger attacks a child, we all have a stake in destroying it. The danger is one to every child, not just a minority of children. Peanut butter crackers arent like that: the great majority of children are not adversely affected by peanut butter crackers. Tigers also dont directly affect families in a positive way the way inexpensive food in a time of high inflation. Are there alternatives to snacks with nuts in them? Sure... they just cost a lot or are terrible for them. The variety of healthful and inexpensive no nut snacks is quite limited. As a practical matter, we cant expect the kindergartner who is allergic to nuts to be able to keep themselves safe. Perhaps not the first grader either. But why cant I send any nut-containing products with my fifth grader? Surely, by then, children with allergies can be expected to know how to decline sharing due to their allergies? At some point these kids will have to adapt to the world, not have the world adapt to them.
