Allport in his works “The Ego in Contemporary Psychology”, - TopicsExpress

Allport in his works “The Ego in Contemporary Psychology”, published in 1943, and “Becoming: Basic Considerations for a Psychology of Personality”, published in 1955, reviewed many of the meanings of “ego” and “self” in psychological writings. He questioned the necessity of the concept of “self”. He proposed that all the self- or ego-functions that have been described be called propriate functions of personality. He felt that in order to more scientific, it would be necessary to dispense with the common word self and substitute something else. The propriate functions, Allport suggested, include sense, self-identity, self-esteem, self-extension, sense of selfhood, rational thinking, self-image, propriate striving, cognitive style, and the function of knowing. Allport gave a common term to these concepts, called the “proprium”. It is in this region of personality, Allport believed, that the root of consistency can be found that marks attitudes, intentions, and evaluations. The proprium is not innate but develops in time.
