Alma Fleet Launch At the morning high tide on October 14th, seventeen fishing boats will sail out from the wharf in Alma, New Brunswick, to the cheers of an appreciative and loyal community. The autumn lobster season in the small fishing and tourist village of Alma kicks off with a celebration and community festival. The Alma Business Association has been promoting the event as “pajama friendly” as the boats will sail out at 6:30 a.m. Event coordinator Jane Chrysostom says the early morning hour won’t affect attendance. “It’s a holiday Monday and we’re proud of our fleet, which brings in the most delicious lobsters in the world. It’s not easy work! Our Fleet Launch festival celebrates our fishermen, our maritime culture, and importance of the industry to our very small community. It’s important to celebrate that and to let them know!” Alma village (population 251) will begin the festivities with the ringing of the church bells on Main Street, at six a.m. At the wharf, all are invited to enjoy a hot breakfast bar for coffee, tea, cider, breakfast pastries, and porridge. “Partnering with community businesses that are contributing to the event provides us with locally sourced foods, and reflects the growing trend toward supporting local business, goods, and products,” said Chrysostom. The interpretive staff at neighbouring Fundy National Park will give lively and engaging demonstrations about the habitat and life of the world-famous Fundy lobster. Foods of the Fundy Valley will also be at the wharf, providing information on local food producers and sharing the “FUNDY FRESH” brand displayed by area businesses and restaurants that rely on the seasonal catch. The hard-working fishermen don’t punch a time clock, Chrysostom explains; their workday (or night) is totally subject to the tide. Alma wharf has some of the highest tides in the world – sometimes as high as 14 metres. The fleet of ships will cast off their lines at high tide and they anticipate it will be the start of a great lobster season. Friends, family, and visitors join in the camaraderie – an awesome experience for all the senses.
