Almost 18 years ago to the day, my friend Roger Sheppard asked if i could fill in for him at a show in Little Rock Arkansas, for Beltone corporation. As a single parent with 3 kids at home at the time, I didnt turn down many offers. Lol. As the time of the show approached, I doubt I could have been more nervous. It was a big event and the opening act in all probability shouldve been the closing act. An acapella group called The Sweet Adelines. 30 women lets build a stage and absolutely rocked the place. Like I wasnt nervous enough already, Im sitting there thinking, good grief, I have to follow these guys. There was no way I wanted to let Roger down after he recommended me. There was no way I could match the magical skills of Roger Sheppard. I remembered something Mr Bobo they told me. People just want to be entertained he said, they dont remember much of the magic but they do remember whether or not they had a good time. I ditched my planned show at the last minute and I changed over to more of a comedy- improv type show with a lot of audience interaction. When I was done I received a standing ovation and signed autographs for 30 minutes. That one event more than any other inspired me to try and be better than what I was. I cant think Roger enough for the opportunity. That was 18 years ago. In about an hour I go on stage to work another event that Roger sent my way. This will be my 6th statewide event in the last 9 months. I just wanted to take a moment to say thank you my friend for all opportunities you sent my way. It has opened up so many doors remain it is allowed me to be an ambassador for the Texarkana area, a place that has treated me and my family so well since moving here from new orleans.
