Almost 3 weeks ago I got a call about 25 ducklings being shipped to tractor supply and 18 froze to death and the remaining were dying. I pickup up the last 6, 1 died on the way home and another 2 hours later, the two that died looked like these ducks in this text book. Says viral hepatitis. So the one pekin has been overheating, panting and hot beak, tail down, wobbly on feet, and occasional sniffles. Is it because she might be a jumbo pekin or is it possible they all got this virus and she is damaged by it. In the text book it says duckling usually die by 4 weeks, if they live they often get a secondary bacterial infection, if they survive they are damaged. I called my vet and she did research and said antibiotics should not be given to a duckling that bones are developing and she didnt know what to do, then called another vet and they didnt return my call. Not sure what to do. Its weird she does not move away from heat when she is hot, she usually cools down with removal of heat lamp and fresh cold water, if I leave the heat lamp off she seems ok but I worry about the other ducks not being warm enough, although they snuggle with her to stay warm, so do you think its possible they had compromised immune systems and got this viral hep or its a breed thing with the jumbo pekin? I have them on avian charge (immune support), vitamins and probiotics. If she needs antibiotics which one would not interfere with bone growth?
