Almost exactly one year ago, Dec. 6, 2013, I penned an op-ed piece in the Chicago Tribune, calling for a voter registration renaissance in Illinois, which could be achieved through a multi-pronged approach I dubbed All In. This would involve Illinois joining a multistate data-sharing organization, ERIC, which would result in cleaner and more inclusive voter lists. Additionally, I called for Illinois to convert most government transactions into voter registration update opportunities. I also have called for Illinois to make election day registration permanent and available at all polling places. EDR was very popular in the gubernatorial general election, where it was a pilot program, available at select sites. Even so, it enfranchised thousands of voters. Yesterday, the Illinois House and Senate passed SB 172, which will bring to fruition this vision of an inclusive Illinois voter list, that will ultimately enhance the accuracy of voter rolls, increase participation and improve efficiency. Many people and groups worked hard to get this bill passed, including Speaker Madigan, House Leader Barbara Flynn Currie, Sen. Don Harmon, and Sen. President John Cullerton, and I thank them all. A link to my press release on SB 172 follows here.
