Alot of people are writing about the stores staying open on Thanksgiving. Is it wrong? Of course it is. But the stores do it because clearly there is a demand to spend the money on overhead, because when it comes down to it, I guarantee the stores that open will be busy. Because god forbid people cant NOT shop for one day. I understand in Metro destinations such as NYC, Miami, LA, San Fran, because this is a wholly American Holiday and it is also a big tourist week from all over the world. So if you are accomodating a tourist market, I get it on some level. But I know from living in the area, if Roosevelt Field is open, it will for sure be mobbed. The fault here is on the consumer society. The retail side of it is reactionary to demand, and this situation applies for the most part to low and mid end retail, so it doesnt affect me or my family. But, I dont see anyone complaining about keeping people from their families on Christmas Eve, which to many people is a holier day than Christmas. And as a retailer, I can tell you that the public has no problem flooding stores at 5:59pm on Christmas Eve. Having people work who are of the Christian Faith on Christmas Eve is something I feel bad about every year, because for most it is when they celebrate. But we work in retail, and thats what we signed up for.
