Alright, if anybody else has run across a copy of How to Play - TopicsExpress

Alright, if anybody else has run across a copy of How to Play Alone, please let me know. I’d be a bit creeped out if I had the only copy in existence. I ordered the book from a website... Barnes and Noble maybe, I don’t remember. I called them up after reading through some of the book, and they told me that they’ve never stocked that title. How to Play Alone is a small black book, about five inches tall and three inches wide. No cover art, just the title written in plain white ink. The pages all appear to be photocopies of hand-written notebook pages. None of the pages are numbered. The first page has the title, and nothing else. No author name, no publisher, nothing. I’ve searched the book, but the information doesn’t appear anywhere. I have no idea who wrote this dang book. The book is divided into short chapters, each containing instructions on how to play a game. The chapters are numbered, but they appear out of order in the book. And I use the word “games” loosely, because the instructions are usually downright bizarre, and the games that are being described don’t sound like any game I’d ever play. In fact, some of the games sound more like rituals of some sort. The fact that you’re apparently supposed to do them alone is the part that gets me. Just… alright, I’m just going to show you a couple of the games and you’ll see what I mean. Contents[show] Chapter 23: Hide This game must be played in complete darkness. There cannot be any light, or they wont come. Make sure that the home you are in is completely dark. If there is more than one floor, all of the floors must be dark. Completely dark is when you can have your eyes closed or open and it looks exactly the same. When it is completely dark, find a corner to stand in that faces to the North and the East. Stand exactly two feet away from that corner, hold your hands over your eyes and start counting. Start at one, then continue counting up. If you reach 100 and nothing happens, stop counting and turn on every light in the house. You have failed. If you hear a whispering voice from the corner begin to count with you, stop counting. Do not look at the corner. Leave the room without looking at the corner. The game has begun. When you enter a new room, search for a hiding spot. If the count stops before you find a hiding spot, you will fail. If you find a hiding spot, stay there. Do not speak. Do not move from the hiding spot. If you leave the hiding spot before the game is over, you will fail. When the count ends, it will announce, Ready or not, here I come, and it will begin to search for you. Do not leave your hiding spot, or it will find you. If it finds you, you will fail. If the lights come on, it has given up the search. The game is now over. You win. Chapter 54: Wait This game must be played on the day before a special occasion, such as a holiday or birthday. At the very beginning of the day, before anything else is done, light a fire. It can be a candle, a burning piece of paper, or anything. They dont care. Stare deep into the flame and whisper, Tomorrow is a special day. Make it so. Then touch the flame with the index finger of your dominant hand. The game has begun. From now until midnight, the flame must not be allowed to go out. If the flame is extinguished, you will fail. In addition, you must not sleep for the entire duration of the game. If you sleep, you will fail. If the rules are followed, the flame will go out at midnight exactly. At this point, you may go to sleep and you will not fail. The next day, you will lose a treasured item and gain two items that you will treasure equally. The game is now over. You win. Chapter 2: Watch This game can be played at any time with no requirements. Go into a room with multiple people. Pick one person and stare directly at their face until they make eye contact. The game has begun. For the next thirty minutes, you must not look away from this person. Do not lose sight of them. If you lose sight of them, you will fail. If you manage to watch them for exactly thirty-one minutes, they will approach you and ask you your name. Do not speak to them yet. If you speak to them now, you will fail. After exactly thirty seconds, the person will ask you if you know them. Reply with, yes, but not by my name. The person will then ask you what their name is. Respond with the first name that you think of. If you give them a different name, you will fail. If you give them your name, you will fail. After hearing the name, the person will believe that that is their name. If it is the name of a person you know, that person will assume the true name of the person you spoke to. The game is now over. You win. Chapter 41: Never This game is to be played while in complete isolation and in temperatures below 30 degrees Fahrenheit. Wearing a coat or other heavy clothing is advised. When a suitable place is found to play this game, you must sit cross-legged facing to the north. Wait in this position for eight minutes without moving. If nothing happens, you must get up and move at least a mile away from the area. You have failed. If you hear a voice whisper your name, stand up and say, Im here. The voice will whisper again and ask you what your deepest desire is. Do not answer this question. If you answer this question, the desire you name will be fulfilled, but at a steep cost. After one minute, the voice will ask you what your deepest fear is. Answer this question with, I never want this to happen. Then sit back down and close your eyes. You will feel warm, then cold. Wait until these feelings have passed, then get up and walk two miles away from the area. If you played by the rules, the thing you fear happening to you the most will never come to pass. The game is now over. You win. Chapter 25: Afraid This game is to begin before 3:25 in the morning. To begin this game, find a piece of paper that is exactly 11 by 8. If no such piece of paper is within reach, cutting a piece of paper to this exact dimensions will work. On this piece of paper, use a pencil to begin writing down the things that you fear most. If you cannot fill the entire piece of paper with your fears, there is no need to proceed any further. When your fears fill the paper, light a candle. Set the paper 5 inches away from the base of the candle so that the top of the paper is facing the candle and to the north. If this is done correctly, you will hear a whisper. Turn around and leave the room immediately. Until 12:00 that night, the room must not be entered. If you enter the room before that time, you will experience every fear written on that piece of paper. If anyone else enters the room, they will experience their own worst fears as well as those written on the paper. At 12:00 at night, you may re-enter the room. The candle will be out, and the paper will be blank. Furthermore, you will no longer be afraid of any of the things you wrote on that paper. If the candle used for this game is ever lit again, anyone who sees it will experience every fear written on your paper. The game is now over. You win. Chapter 89: Break This game is to be played with only the player present. Anyone else who is present will fail. To begin the game, simply sit cross-legged in the middle of the room and whisper the name of your choice. This must only be done when only you are present in the room. Anyone else present at the time the game begins will fail. At the point of the games beginning, a black chess pawn will appear somewhere within ten feet of you. You must find this pawn within the minute that it appears. If you do not find this pawn, you will fail. If you manage to find the pawn, announce that you have found it and place it in the spot where you first announced the starting of the game. At this point, you must announce that you wish to continue playing. Another black pawn will appear within ten feet of you, and you must find this pawn within the minute. This game continues until you fail to find a chess piece or until you have found an entire set of black pieces. With every subsequent piece you find, something about your personality, body or life will drastically change. If you find a set of eight black pawns, two black rooks, two black knights, two black bishops, a black king and a black queen, you will be told to stop playing the game. At this point, all alterations that have been made will become permanent. The game is now over. You win. Chapter 32: Go This game is to be played for an eternity. To begin this game, you must light a candle and place it on top of a piece of paper. On this paper, write down the first name that you think of. If the name is your own, you cannot win this game and will fail. Once this is done, you must leave the area where you lit the candle. As soon as the candle burns out, a _____ going by the name you wrote down will begin hunting you. To avoid this _____, you must never go to the same location more than once for the duration of the game. If you return to a location that youve visited before, you will fail. If you die at any point during the game, you will fail. If the _____ catches you at any point during the game, you will fail. Chapter 06: Lose This game is never to be played. Do not begin this game. If you begin this game, you will fail. If you continue this game beyond the beginning, everyone will fail. If you begin this game, there is no way to end it. The game is now over. Nobody wins. Chapter 31: Mind A story to be read alone. Shhhh... come closer. Do you know who I am? I know that you dont. Thats fine, you do not need to know. All you need to know is that you are safe. There is no need to turn around. You are safe. You turned around, didnt you? Do you not trust me? I wont hurt you, you know. You are safe. I am here to play a game with you. Dont you like games? Here is how the game works. I will read your mind. Then you will see whats inside. Oh... you dont want me to read your mind? Thats fine. If you dont want me to read your mind, just close the book. I see. Your curiosity has gotten the better of you. Youre wondering if its an effect of this page, or perhaps another. Its not. I can see it. Its a burning desire thats buried deep down inside of you. You want to know. But you are afraid. You are safe. This desire seems to have influenced you before. Sometimes not for the better, either. Such as when you took twenty dollars from your cash register at work. You thought nobody was watching, didnt you? Oh, youre leaving. Thats fine. I know youll come back. (There was a lot more to this story, but Im not going to post the rest. Do NOT ask to see it. Personally, I wish I hadnt seen it to begin with.) Chapter 97: Last This game is to be played within the first hour of the first day of a new year. It is recommended that you prepare for this game beforehand. Before the game begins, choose. Your choice must be an object, inanimate or otherwise, that exists in the physical realm. Within the first second of the first minute of the first hour of the first day of the new year, make sure that you are holding your choice in your hands. This must be done throughout the entire duration of the game. If your hand leaves your choice at any moment, you fail. When the first minute of the first hour of the first day of the new year has expired, close your eyes and whisper the phrase, In this moment you turn to ash. In eternity you last forever. Do not let your hands leave your choice, or you will fail. When the first hour of the first day of the new year has expired, your choice will catch fire and begin to burn away. Do not let your hands leave your choice until there is nothing left but ashes. At this point, you must collect every single bit of ash from your choice and put it all in a container where it is still visible. If the container is sealed, you will fail. Place this container in a position near a window. When the first day of the new year has expired, ______ will come to retrieve the ashes. If you observe them during this time, you will fail. When ______ leaves, the ashes and the container holding them will be replaced by a sealed jar made of black clay. From this point into eternity, your choice will appear next to this clay jar on the first day of every new year. If this clay pot is ever unsealed or broken, it will appear again on the first day of the following new year. This will continue until your expiration, at which point you will be reunited with your choice and last. The game is now over. You win. Chapter 4: Dark This game is to be played in complete darkness. Recommended to be played at night. To begin this game, choose a room that you wish to become the dark place. Your choice must then be made completely void of light. No light, natural or artificial, must be allowed to enter this room for the duration of the game. Once a suitable place has been prepared, enter the dark room and sit cross-legged at the very center. Close your eyes and say the phrase, I desire the darkness to dance with me. If no reply comes, check the room for any light and try again. If done correctly, a voice will begin whispering to you in words you cannot comprehend. Do not speak to this voice. If you speak to this voice, you will fail. If you open your eyes, you will fail. After two minutes of speaking, the voice will fall silent. At this point, you must stand up and walk out of the room. This room is now the dark place. No light can come into the room, and nothing can be seen inside. Any light that penetrates the dark place will be swallowed up and lost forever. Any person who attempts to step into the dark place will fail. Any attempt to seal the dark place will be met with failure. If anything comes out of the dark place, you will forever fail. The game is now over. Chapter 18: Wish This game may only be played with your choice from Chapter 16. If you have not played Chapter 16, then you will fail. To begin this game, you and your choice must stand exactly eighteen miles away from each other and aligned so that your choice is to the west. When this arrangement has been achieved, the game will begin. When the game begins, you and your choice must stand facing each other and, at the same time, light a candle. Within three seconds, at the same time, you must both place your candles exactly 1 foot in front of you. Repeat this process two more times. If this is done incorrectly, all six candles will go out and you will both fail. If done correctly, the candles will remain lit. At this point, you are able to make three wishes. With each consecutive wish, one of the candles will go out. When all three candles go out, you have used up all of your wishes and must wait. All three of your wishes will now come true for one person who stood between you and your choice during the game. When this occurs, this person will be given three wishes of their own. Their wishes will come true for you, so be careful what you may have wished for them. The game is now over. You win. Chapter 29: Beginning Now is where it begins. The only place where it can start is at the beginning, and this is it. From this point on, the game has begun. To play this game, you need nothing more than to listen. Listen well, for a slight misstep can mean that you fail. Failure can mean any number of things. It may mean the end of the game. It may mean (writing here is indecipherable). Do NOT fail. As the future holder of this book, it is your duty to read every page and comprehend what every game means. If you do not perform this task, you will fail. If you try to run from this task, you will fail. If you pass this task on, you will fail. It is your duty. Do NOT fail. (I think this is meant to be the beginning of the book. Why I found it so many pages in is beyond me.) February 7th, 2014 Finally! I knew I kept the box the book came in. I just found it stuffed in the basement a little while ago. I examined the box, and I found a return address. Its a Michigan address, about five hours from where I live. I tried to find a phone number, but naturally I didnt get that lucky. If it werent for the driving conditions right now, Id head up there on my day off and see what I can find. Maybe once the weather warms up. Right now, all I can do is keep reading and keep posting. Chapter 10: Test The first test will begin when you know yourself to be ready. On the night the first test begins, you will have a dream. In this dream, you will be flying. You will be flying through clouds of smoke, ash and dust. You will be tempted to look down to find the source of the smoke, ash and dust. Dont look down. If you look down, you will see the future. If you see the future, you will be compelled to land. Dont land. If you land, you will be compelled to stay and find out what happened. You will begin searching for answers. Dont land. If you find the answers you are searching for, you will realize that (text was indecipherable). You will never wake up, since waking up has no meaning. Nothing will ever have meaning again. Dont look down. If you wake up, you will find the first token of completion nearby. Keep this in a safe place; it is the first of ten. Once you have the first, there is no going back. The test is now over. You win. Chapter 84: Age This game must be played between 8:35 pm and 8:50 pm on the first day of any month. Before the game starts, have a candle, a knife and a piece of paper at the ready. At exactly 8:35 pm, light the candle. The game has begun. Within the next four minutes, choose the first number that you think of. Begin writing this number on the piece of paper as many times as it will fit. If you write a different number than you originally thought of, you fail. When four minutes has passed, stop writing and wait for three minutes. If you keep writing, you fail. At the end of three minutes, pick up the knife and begin holding the blade in the flame of the candle. Hold it there for exactly seven minutes, making sure to heat the blade evenly. After exactly seven minutes, douse the candle flame and touch the blade of the knife to the bottom-right corner of the paper. If done correctly, the paper will catch on fire and burn away until there is nothing left. If it has not burned away before 8:50 pm, it will never stop burning and you have failed. When the paper is completely burned away, take the knife and hold it up to the candle. If done correctly, your hand will be guided to carve the number you chose into the candle wax. From this point on, this candle will never completely burn down. If it is lit in the presence of anyone whos age does not match the number on the candle, that persons physical age will change to match the number on the candle and the candle will go out. If the candle is lit in the presence of someone whos age matches the number on the candle, then (text was indecipherable). The game is now over. You win. July 22, 2014 Curse this book! Actually, screw that, its probably already cursed. I tried to put it down. I tried to forget about it, and I actually did for several months. I set the thing on top of the refrigerator and left it to get covered in dust. I told myself that this was it. No more. Last night, I had a dream where I was flying through a cloud of smoke. Like something was burning. I didnt think too much about it until I woke up. Immediately, Chapter 10 came to mind. I found the book sitting on my bedside table. Next to it was a small, silver token with a raven on it. Its not going to let me stop. I have to continue. I have to see this to the end or Ill fail. Chapter 61: Home This game must be played during a lunar eclipse. During a lunar eclipse, the moon cannot see the wanderers. The moon is what tells them that they can have no home. When the moon cannot see them, the wanderers are free to find a home. On the night that a lunar eclipse will take place, prepare your home for their coming. Open every window and door that faces east so that they may be welcomed. Arrange every chair to face the south so that they may be inclined to stay. Cook a meal of rice and bread so that they may be appeased. Finally, sprinkle salt water on every window and door to the west so that they may not leave. During the lunar eclipse, the wanderers will pass from the east to the west in search of a home. They will enter your home through the east, eat the meal you have fixed, and be unable to leave. During their stay, you must remain silent. If you speak to them, you will fail. If you look at them, you will fail When the lunar eclipse is over, the wanderers will ask you why you have trapped them. Do not respond. If you respond, they will force you to wander. If you remain silent, they will cease to be wanderers and will become dwellers. The game is now over. You win. Chapter 73: Block This game can be played at any time. Find a piece of paper, and cut it to exactly three inches by five and three-eighths inches. Make a notch in both of the short ends of the paper at the four inch mark and fold it along the line the two notches make. Make sure there is a visible seam along the fold, then unfold the paper. Your letter is now ready. On the larger part of the paper, write a single word as many times as will fit. This word must be the first word that comes to mind. If you write a different word, you will fail. If you write more than just one word, you will fail. Once the larger side of the paper is filled up, fold it up again and put it in an envelope. Seal this envelope with wax, and address it only with the name (writing was indecipherable). During the night, leave this envelope within ten feet of where you will be sleeping along with one ounce of sugar. In the morning, the envelope and the sugar will both be gone. In exactly one week, you will cease to remember the word that you wrote on the letter. You will no longer be able to think of the word, and it will be a gap in your memory. Should you ever recall the word, you fail. The game is now over. You win. Chapter 93: Glass This game must be played after 10:30 pm and before 11:00 am. On the longest night of the year, you must find a piece of glass cut into the shape of a circle. This piece of glass must have a diameter of four inches and must be pure glass. If it is not pure glass, it will not be accepted and you will fail. Place the glass piece on a round table. The glass must be at the exact center of the surface of the table. Set a single grain of salt at the exact center of the glass. If you hear a grateful whisper, do not touch the table or the items on it anymore. If you touch the items after this point, you will fail. After five hours, the table will be glass. After ten hours, the world will be glass. The people will be glass. The trees will be glass. The animals will be glass. The ground will be glass. The air will be glass. The sky will be glass. All transparent. All so fragile. It was already glass. You simply couldnt see it. If you remove the salt from the glass, you will be glass again. The game is now over. You win. Chapter 68: Ill This game must be played on a night of severe cold or severe heat. At a half hour until midnight, you must go to an area that is exposed to the elements. Find a place where you are not sheltered from the sky. Lie down on your back and spread your arms to the left and to the right. When you are in this position, look to the sky and meet the gaze of the night. The game has begun. For the next twenty minutes, you will suffer every ailment and disease that you would have suffered in your entire lifetime. This time will pass as if it were an entire year, and will be excruciating. If you move during this time, you will fail. If you break the gaze of the night, you will fail. During the final minute of this game, you will suffer through the circumstance that would have ended your life. This will be the hardest part of this game, but you must persist. If you move during this period, you will die the death that you are experiencing. If you do not move before the end of this period, you will be unable to move or blink for the next ten minutes. At the end of ten minutes, you will be able to move again. At this point, you may get up and leave. From this point on, you will no longer experience any illness or decay. This has all been passed to a substitute. Before the end comes, you will meet the substitute. If you do not play 69 when you do, they will fail. The game is now over. You win. October 5th, 2014 I hate this book. I hate it with a passion. I read game 46 and thought it would be safe to play. Apparently, this particular game has some kind of effect that makes the wiring in my house sentient. Im not even sure how that works, and Im not in the mood to find out anymore. Heres a tip for you all: do NOT play game 46 when you have a lot of sensitive electrical appliances. Now that Ive replaced the fried computer (and paid an annoyingly high electric bill), I can get back to posting. And I should mention that during my absence, I managed to visit that address that the book saw shipped from. Im not ready to make any assumptions about what the heck is going on here, but I do know one thing for certain. Im not happy about what I found. October 9th, 2014 I had to go back one more time, just to make sure that I hadnt been at the wrong address or something. All that did was confirm what I had seen the first time. The house that the shipping address led me to was abandoned. The place was in shambles. Paint had mostly peeled off of any walls that were still standing. The furniture that was left was riddled with mouse holes and missing most of the stuffing. Parts of the floor had caved in, leaving a gaping hole that led straight down into the basement. After the first trip, I had been advised not to enter the house. However, my curiosity was simply too intense for me to refrain from exploring. Im not stupid, though; I didnt do a lot of exploring, the last thing I wanted was to die from asbestos exposure... or falling through the rotting floor. I didnt find anything of interest inside the house, at least not in the areas I was brave enough to explore. As I was leaving, however, I did notice a black cat had climbed into the back seat of my car. I shooed the thing away; the last thing I need is a cat taking up space in my house. Chapter 37: Reflect This game must be played with a mirror that is more that 60 years old. An even older mirror is preferred. All preparations should be made before midnight. To prepare for this game, set up the mirror in a dark room facing to the north. Make sure that there are no other mirrors, windows or reflective surfaces able to be seen in the mirror at any angle. If you are careless, you will fail. Have six long candles and a means of lighting them within reach. At exactly an hour until midnight, take the first candle and set it down exactly one foot from the northeast corner of the mirror. Wait for fifteen minutes, then light the second candle and place it exactly one foot from the southeast corner of the mirror. Wait fifteen minutes after that, then light the third candle and place it exactly one foot from the southwest corner of the mirror. Wait for fourteen minutes after that, then light the fourth candle and place it at the northwest corner of the mirror. During the final minute leading up to midnight, light the two remaining candles and hold them in each hand. Once this is done, stand exactly five feet away from the reflective face of the mirror. Face away from the mirror and, at exactly midnight, say these words: I wish to see the image of my true self. At this point, you must turn around and face the mirror. If you see a reflection that is not your own, you may end this game without consequence or play chapter 38. If you see yourself but not your reflection, you must play chapter 16 or you will fail. If you see your own reflection, you have failed. If you see a door or window in the mirror, immediately extinguish every candle, cover the mirror and leave the room. You have chosen the wrong mirror. If you ever uncover the mirror and look into it again, you will see the door or window open. At this point, you have let it in and will soon fail. The game is now over. You win. Chapter 14: Egg This game must be played before 12:00 pm with an egg that was laid the same day. Take the egg and place it atop a few grains of sugar in a space no smaller than 10 feet by 8 feet. If the space is any smaller, you will be unable to begin the game. Once the egg has been placed, all light must be removed from the room. If you are able to see the egg at all while you are in the room, you will fail. When all lights have been extinguished, stand in the northeast corner of the room. Facing the egg, close your eyes and begin counting down from one hundred at a steady pace. If at 80 you hear a rush of wind, you must not stop counting. The game has begun. As you continue counting, you will begin to feel small waves of pleasure running up your body. Maintain a steady pace and do not stop counting, or you will fail. As you count, the pleasure will steadily increase to the point of becoming overwhelming. When you reach thirty, the pleasure will cease and you will be struck by waves of unimaginable pain. Keep counting and maintain the pace or you will fail. When you reach zero, the pain will cease. At this point, you may stop counting and must immediately leave the room. Once you have left, seal the room and do not return for exactly thirty-five days. If you return before this point, you will fail. When the thirty-five days have passed, you must return to the room and turn on the lights. If the egg appears to have hatched, you may discard the egg and resume your life. However, you will feel an overwhelming sense of peace, as if something is watching over you. This peace will last until the end of your life, at which point you will meet your guardian. If you neglected to seal the room before leaving or do not return in time, you will still find the egg broken when you return. After this point, you may occasionally see something out of the corner of your eye and experience the feeling of being followed. If this happens, you must play chapter 16 or you will eventually fail. The game is now over. You win. Chapter 63: Twist This game must not be played by you, but by a proxy. You must convince the proxy to play this game. To begin this game, the proxy must have a roll of twine. They must also be wearing a long-sleeved top and long pants. Footwear, gloves and a head covering will add to the effects of this game. The proxy must stand in a place where you may see them, but the proxy may not see you. If the proxy is able to see you, you will fail. The proxy must take the twine and wrap it around their ankles. First their left ankle, then their right. They must then wrap the twine around their wrists in the same manner; first the left, then the right. The remaining twine must be placed at their feet and unrolled. Finally, the proxy must lay on their back and place their hands on their chest. After remaining this way for thirty seconds, the proxy will vanish and their clothing be left behind. The game has begin. At this point, you are free to enter the area where the proxys clothing is laying. Take the twine and use it to form a circle around the proxys clothing, then tie it off and leave it. If the twine is moved or destroyed without the proxys clothing inside, the proxy will fail. Once the circle is formed, you are free to remove the proxys clothing and manipulate it in any way you desire. Do not put on the clothing at any point, or you will fail and the proxy will become the new player. In order to bring about the proxys return, you must place the proxys clothing inside of the circle and light the twine forming the circle on fire. When the last of the twine has burned away, the proxy will reappear inside their clothing. When the proxy reappears, any changes made to the clothing will be added to the proxys body. If any clothing pieces are missing from the circle, the proxy will be missing the associated parts. If the clothing was separated, the proxy will be as well. If the clothing was twisted or cut, the proxy will be as well. The game is now over. You win. creepypasta.wikia/wiki/How_to_Play_Alone
