Alright, rant time. This time, about music. Listen, folks. Nothing gets me more irritated than hearing this phrase. _________ isnt music. You have no right to say that. Its most often applied to rappers or country music, due to there being a minority(albeit vocal) who enjoy it as it is. Its often used as a blanket statement. To say that Rap, Country, or [insert your least favorite genre of music here] isnt music is to try and define music as one thing. Music is formless and shapeless. Music is only defined by what it is at the time. By the form given to it by those who make it. Music is, at its very core, without definition. I dont like a lot of modern day rappers. I think their materialistic views and thug lifestyles make them poor role models, and Im not fond of their music as a general rule. But I acknowledge it as music, and I dont let my distaste for a chunk of a genre flavor the entirety of my musical desires, nor do I state that it isnt music simply because I dont like it. Now, there is a baseline, a border that separates music and poetry. After all, what is music but poetry with a beat? Some say that the baseline to be considered music is that there has to be an instrument involved. That there must be some form of noise created that has no meaning except the sound it makes and cannot be construed as a word of any sort, creating a rhythm. Sometimes alongside words. This is open to interpretation. My point is, dont try and use the fact that you dont like something as an excuse to devalue it. And dont discount current genres and subgenres just because you feel their predecessors were better. Sure, I prefer Johnny Cash to Kenny Chesney, but Im not going to say that EVERYTHING CASH MADE WAS THE BEST THING EVER AND KENNY SUCKS, no. Thats a silly statement. tl;dr: Dont be an oldfag. Dont be a newfag either. Like what you like and let others enjoy what they enjoy. Its not that difficult, people. Music is awesome, enjoy it as you will. Now behold the song that sparked the discussion that began this rants existence. https://youtube/watch?v=r1Co1mfz23U
