Alright, so: I got the results of the scan back. There is *some* damage to both ACL but nothing inconsistent with the effects of long-term intense exercise - the actual cause of all the pain is cartilage damage. Which is pretty much what I was told by the physio. However, the cartilage damage hasnt been caused by the ACL damage as I was told initially. Rather, it stems from a congenital defect; in essence, thinner patellar cartilage than is normal. My knees simply cant handle intense exercise - i.e. squatting and dead-lifting and sprints and all the stuff I used to do and so this was an inevitable consequence. So what does this mean? The bad news - No way I can ever lift heavy again, and even full-ROM lifting with a light load might be too much. The good news - No need for an operation (thank Christ!) and if I studiously avoid the things that hurt (see above) the cartilage will, eventually, repair itself. And luckily I no longer miss squats and deadlifts; Im quite happy training the way I am Good News 3 - 2 Bad News. Good News wins by 1.
