Alright so I just finished Disc 1 of Xenogears and I feel like giving my impressions of the game now that I have one disc to go. The story and setting not only feel original, but incredibly interesting. Its filled with tons of religious symbolism and allusions (even though Im atheist I love seeing this kinda stuff cause of all the things you can do with it. Thats one of the reasons I love Eva so much.) that helped add depth to the story. The story also kept building on itself as it went on and took plenty of unexpected twists. Characters are vary well written and all of their motivations are explained clearly. Development is also a forefront with the characters. The battle system is very unique and fun to play. Having on foot and Gear combat helped change things up. Sucks that I didnt figure out how learning Deathblows worked cause I dont have any of the high level ones (gonna change that though). The dungeon exploration was pretty well done (EXCEPT BABEL TOWER. HATE THAT PLACE). Although I am not a fan of isometric platforming, but it doesnt come up too often. Music is well done, albeit a bit repetitive. The graphics actually look pretty good for a PS1 game. The sprite work on the characters is great looking. The only real issue I had is that some of the areas looked a bit on the bland side. Overall its a really amazing game so far. Now I start the infamous second disc. For those who dont know the game was supposed to be four discs. But Squaresoft cut the budget to allocate more money to Final Fantasy 8. So what about that extremely complex plot? Thats where the second disc comes in. Disc 2 changes by restricting overworld movement, dungeon exploration, and random battles so the stories plot points can be tied up and the story can finish. So theres basically cut scene after cut scene and then a boss battle. Rinse and repeat. Only right at the end can you explore the world again, do sidequests, and explore dungeons again. But Im still looking forward to it cause of how great the story and characters are. So far its a great game and it could end up being one of my favorites ever. https://youtube/watch?v=x39PiyCY-QI
