Altas nix Stags, secures playoff The University of Perpetual Help System DALTA (UPHSD) Altas, behind the troika performance of Earl Scottie Thompson, Juneric Baloria, and Harold Arboleda, crushed the San Sebastian College (SSC) Stags, 92-76, on Saturday in the 90th National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) seniors basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City. Thompson, a strong candidate for the Most Valuable Player plum, scored 11 points in the pivotal period to help secure the Altas’ 12th win in 16 matches and move a step closer to the Final Four. He finished with 29 points, nine rebounds, eight assists, a block and a steal to complete an MVP-worthy performance. Baloria and Arboleda, who are expected to get contracts at NLEX in the PBA after the NCAA, scattered 24 and 16 points respectively. The victory earned the Altas a playoff slot for the Final Four berth. During the fourth quarter run, Thompson sizzled with 11 points, Arboleda with 10, and Baloria with eight. “We were more aggressive in the fourth quarter, that was the difference,” said Altas coach Aric del Rosario in Filipino. The Stags appeared headed to pulling the rug from under the Altas when they dictated the pace almost all throughout and led, 63-58, early in the final canto. But the Altas trio took over from there as Perpetual Help overran an unnerved San Sebastian side. Thompson earned the Player of the week plum after leading the Altas to crucial victories against College of St. Benilde and San Sebastian College.
