Alternative investments: Can You Make Money on Lego? bit.ly/13cxAlw This might strike you as an odd question, but this blog is about alternative investments after all. In fact, this is the first (yes I know) idea that got us interested in alternative investing in the first place. Let me explain. Alternative Investments: Can You Make Money On Lego? A friend of mine started a dinner party conversation a few months ago, about communities of people investing in Lego, not the company, but the actual bricks. Sadly, the Lego sets should be in mint (i.e. unopened) condition if you’re hoping to make a profit on them, but lets not let a thing like that put us off. There are loads of people buying up Lego sets when they come out, holding them for a few years in safe storage, and selling them on for a profit. So many in fact, that there are a collection of pretty legit Lego tracker sites out there. Our favorite is Brick Picker which checks the price of Lego sales from Ebay so you can see the current price or your sets, educates people on Lego investing, and even lets you store your own Lego portfolio. Can You Make Money on Lego? Alternative Investments: How Can You Make Money On Lego? The basic premise is this. New themed Lego sets come out very frequently, the price remains relatively steady while the set is still being produced, then when it is discontinued, the price rises. The exact amount is anyone’s guess, and you’ll have to hold the sets for a few years, but in many cases, the price of a set can double over that time. Investing in Lego is not too different from any other form of investing, an educated bet. If you’re not an expert in Lego, then a good choice might be a set that is affiliated with something popular- Harry Potter Lego sets for example, gained a great deal of value. Once you have made your choices, wait to buy them until a few months after they have been released by Lego, as the prices usually drop after initial release. Brick Picker sells Lego sets itself, but you should also take a look at prices at Lego itself, and Amazon, incase you can pick up a bargin. When you take delivery of your set, store them somewhere safe (away from the kids), and keep them in their packaging. If you have space to keep the delivery box closed all the better. Then, enter your Lego set code into your Brick Picker portfolio, and wait for Lego to discontinue the set and the price to rise. Finally, when you are happy with the prices given by Brick Picker, sell your sets. The beauty of Lego sets as an investment is that you can sell them anywhere you like – Ebay and Amazon would both be good options – meaning that you don’t have to learn a complex stock purchasing system to do the investments. Alternative Investments: The Risks Involved Of course, there are no risk free investments, and even if you are investing in something fun like Lego, there’s still an element of risk. Lego could keep making the set, which would impact the price, the theme could prove to be unpopular, or you could lose the sets themselves. Do keep these things in mind when you are investing. Alternative Investments: Popular Lego Sets Looking at Brick Picker today, one of the set themes that is looking pretty good are The Hobbit sets. The sets are currently selling very cheaply – overall down about 50% from when they were first released. With two more films to come, it would make sense for the set to rise in value as demand increases for Hobbit related paraphernalia over the next few years. Of course, the real gains would come when the sets are discontinued. Take a look at the Brick Picker blog for more information on Lego sets tipped to be big winners!
