Although Driglam Namzha(etiquette and code of conduct) is introduced in Bhutan with the advent of Buddhism in 7th century AD, however, Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, the founder of Bhutan during 17th century can be rightly credited with the earliest implementation of Driglam Namzha as a formal practice at an institutional level. He promulgated the "Chayig Chhenmo", containing specific instructions. These instructions and social graces include a wide range of Bhutanese etiquette relating to, such as manners and behaviors as courtesy, politeness, kindness, etc. together with gratitude for social benefits received from parents, elders, teachers and spiritual masters.
