Although I find some of Ayn Rand’s protagonists interesting and heroic, they come across as cartoonish because they’re impossibly unreal people without flaws. It just occurred to me that what Rand did that was most valuable is her portrayal of the “moocher” class. She was effective at showing the logical conclusions and outcomes of the things that collectivists believe. So even though most of us who have been influenced by her work aren’t objectivists and don’t mistake her protagonists for real-life people, we do see her villains are representing the intellectual and social forces who oppose the free market. That’s a very different way of looking at why her work was influential.
