Although I had done nothing wrong, the flashing blue lights in my rear view mirror gave me a jolt. I hadnt noticed him. Of course, I HAD noticed the hottie that came up real quick in the black Chrysler 300 behind me. Ive been pulled over a block from my home before, the reasons given: it was after 10pm and he was concerned for my safety. Smart-aleck that I am, I asked if there was a curfew for 50-somethings I had failed to hear about? I knew he had been fishing for probable cause, but I was clean as a whistle...unlike today. Would the cop take one look at my dark clothing and gloves and think I was up to some nefarious scheme? Would I be able to explain away my muddied slacks and scuffed gloves? Would he believe me when I told him the cause of my split and swollen lips and abraded nose? Could I convincingly joke my way out of a potential ride in the backseat of his patrol car if I told him the other guy looked worse--or would that seal my fate as a trouble-maker? I weighed my options and decided to play it cool--its been my experience our Finest dont respond to my brand of humor--and although our Chief of Staff has told me (a couple of times!) he would bail me out I really didnt want today to be the day I take him up on it. I neednt have been concerned--the cop nabbed the cute guy--since I was the lead car it wasnt for speeding, but he was real quick on the go at the stop sign, so Im thinking he got him for a moving violation like failure to make a complete stop (a cop once told me the nose of the car has to dip). I told you I had done nothing wrong. Oh yeah...my appearance? I took a spill in the parking lot at work this morning--stepped off the curb, misjudged the distance to the far side of the slick mud, caught it, skidded, and fell on my left knee. I broke my fall with the outside of my left hand and the palm of my right; however, the forward momentum had my nose, lip, and tooth meet up with the cement. Im fine--seems my teeth are as hard as my head. The ER doc at the VA cleared me and I was really going to just go home and change and come finish my shift. I did go home and change. I even made it back to work, but after I filled out the paperwork (actually on the computer since we are paperless) I decided since the Float was there and was handling my Ward, I would go ahead and take the rest of the day off. So I treated my self to a much needed pedicure and I went shopping so I wouldnt get stiff from sitting. But I think its time to leave the mall--they are playing Christmas Carols...Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer to be precise. Im kind of tired of flashing lights today and while my band aid hides the redness on my nose, Im afraid it may not hide the possible black eyes tomorrow.
