Although burglars will gain entry into your home any way possible, the doors are still the most commonly used and the quickest way for a burglar to enter a home and also, garage and rear doors generally give them the privacy they need. Many side / rear doors have glass making it even easier for someone to gain entrance to the home. Most often, doors are forced open by kicking or using some type of heavy ram rod. Always ( when possible ) use heavy duty hardware on your door locks. You can make your existing lock stronger by simply replacing the two hole striker plate with a four hole plate and using 3 inch screws. When building or remodeling your home, use solid or steel doors where possible. Also, a wide angle peephole is a great idea. Always lock your vehicles, even at home. Burglars will often search a vehicle for keys to your home. If you have a security system, make sure you place a yardsign or window / door decal in areas where they can be seen from the doors of your home.
