Although ones use of literally was done when it was unclear to the listener whether one meant what was said in a literal, or figural way, its context has changed over time to mean something else. Its use now -- for the most part -- simply puts emphasis in what is being talked about. Because so many people have misused its original meaning over time, I think its fair to say that it no longer means the same thing. Theres no need to be critical about this, because thats just the way it is, and if you dont accept it, youll just be left behind misunderstanding current language. If youre worried about what would take the place of the original use of literally, dont worry about it. People will figure it out. Literally.
