"Although the family has traditionally been the major instrument of socialization for the young, in the last quarter century increasing responsibility for socialization has been transferred to the school or other institutions. The major reason schools and other institutions have taken on a greater role as socializing agents is the changing structure of the family. During the past three decades, the family configuration has changed dramatically. Fewer than 25% of U.S. households are made up of a married man and woman and children (U.S. Bureau of the Census, 2011)." Just an excerpt from my text book.
