Alzheimer’s Test… Both of LaVerne’s parents had Alzheimer’s. There has been some on both sides of my family, so naturally we are concerned that the disease might also strike us. It is devastating to observe the progression of this disease on a loved one. LaVerne’s mother reached the point that she forgot how to swallow. She would chew her food and then just sit there with her mouth full and not knowing to swallow. How do you know that you may be developing Alzheimer’s or some form of Dementia ? After all some memory loss due to ageing is typical. Making a bad decision once in a while, forgetting which day it is and remembering later, losing things from time to time, all typical. Experts at Ohio State University have developed this five question self-assessment test that they claim will detect 4 of 5 with dementia and mild cognitive impairment. (1) What is today’s date ? Month, date and year. (from memory-no cheating). (2) How are a watch and a ruler similar ? Write down how they are alike. “They both are … “? (3) How many nickels are in 60 cents ? (4) You are buying $13.45 worth of groceries. How much change are you due from a $20 bill ? (5) Draw a large face of a clock and place in all of the numbers. Position the hands for five minutes after 11 o’clock. Label “L” for the long hand and “S” for the short hand.
