Am Considering Nursing School, Should I get my BSN right away? by Cynthia Balevre, MSN/Ed, RN-BC, Nurse Educator, Professional Nurse Consultant. That’s a great question, and my initial response is to say, “yes”. But, honestly, making that choice takes much more consideration. Choosing the BSN route first is a great choice if you can do that. The first question you might ask yourself is how soon do you need to work? Obviously, if you are in a rush, and need an income as soon as possible, then I recommend going the diploma or associate’s route. However, if you have the time, and if you are prepared to finance the BSN, then I say, do it! The discussion about the BSN has been a source of contention for nurses for more than ½ a century. You can find research that supports that the bachelor’s prepared nurse as having better outcomes than someone who doesnt have a four year degree. On the same hand, the NCLEX exam is the same regardless of your nursing school training. You have to ask yourself what you ultimately want from your nursing career. Are you planning to continue school, or become an advanced practice nurse? This isnt a decision that needs to be made right away, though. I think it can be great to get the associate’s degree or diploma and then let your employer contribute to your next degree with tuition assistance. If I had to do it all over again, that’s how I would do it. Regardless of your choice of path, becoming a nurse is one of the best decisions you can make for your future. If you want to discuss further, please contact me, and well chat! :)
