Am I Carnal or Spiritual? For the word of God...penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit (Heb.4:12). Christians fall into one of two groups. We are either carnal or spiritual. Of course, while some might humbly refrain from confessing that they are spiritual most might not take too pleasantly to being classified as carnal. So let us define these two states and then see how Gods Sword works to separate them. The words used for soul and spirit are psyche and pneuma, respectively. The word pneuma for the human spirit focuses on the spiritual aspect of man, that is, his life in relation to God. The word psyche refers to mans life irrespective of his spiritual experience, that is, his life in relationship to himself, his emotions and thoughts. This means we have two competing wellsprings of thoughts, one soulish or carnal, and the other spiritual. And because they that are in the flesh (psyche) cannot please God, the Word of God helps us to trade unwholesome attitudes and unproductive activities for that which is pleasing to God and by extension profitable for us. So whether we are carnal or spiritual depends on who is controlling our lives, psyche or pneuma, and the Word of God helps us make that determination.
