Am I proud of being a bhatkali? Bhatkal, a place also known as - TopicsExpress

Am I proud of being a bhatkali? Bhatkal, a place also known as mini dubai, which stands apart because of its unique language and culture.Hijab which doesnt even exist among muslims today still hold its prominence here. A place known for its special delicacies and the taste which beats even the famous cuisines in the world. Multitalented women, with their cooking and culinary skills, women who dare to pursue their talent through catering or by showing their finesse in fashion designing. Yes for all this i am proud to be associated with a place called Bhatkal. But is this all what bhatkal is all about. Alhamdulillah by now we are grown up and we realise how blessed we are to be born a muslim. We are blessed with great parents, we are born healthy, we are not handicaps, we dont have to worry thinking about how we will find our next meal. We have a roof over our heads and above all we have faith in Allah that he is the sole provider of our sustenance, he is the one who bestowed on us everything....our looks, our complexion. So then when the people of bhatkal are so smart enough to realise Allahs blessing in everything, why do they forget that a girl is not responsible for her looks or complexion. That is also a gift of Allah(swt). Why a complexion comes first and the character and skills of a girl become secondary while looking for a daughter in law. I fail to understand this mentality of the women in bhatkal. I agree all women may not be the same. But majority of them come under this category. To all my sisters in bhatkal who get rejected becoz ur not good in ur looks or u r not fair remember u r utmost lucky that u have not gone into such a family. U deserve far better people than these men who fail to recognise ur worth. The saddest part is more than the guy its his sisters or mother who insist on the girl to be fair in her looks. Unfortunately i had to be part of such an incident where i accompanied a house with my sister(jiskeliye hum ladka doond rahe the) where a lady wanted to see her. A lady in that house had a conversation with us in hardly 6,7 sentences. And five times what she said was Powder lau beti. And my sister patiently dabbed her face with this so called powder which has become more important than anyother thing to a bhatkali woman. I was amazed at how calm and composed my sister was. Didnt she feel degraded? And she said she was used to it. I felt so much anger inside me that i felt like walking out of the house. I felt like screaming to those people cant u see? How qualified she is, did u try to find out how her cooking skills are? If she is smart in the household job? Why why why is this gori koski etched in ur minds? At that moment i realised....well i was not proud of this place anymore. My question to all the people out there who are reading this post is Is there any guy or woman out there who is looking for anything else in a girl besides looks and complexion? Then my utmost respect goes out to u. Becoz never forget.......one day it could be your own daughter or your own sister who will be fighting to find a good groom for her self just becoz she is KAALI. And hope one day i will be able to say proudly in every aspect..........YES I AM A BHATKALI. by Nazia kazia
