Amaechi’s expulsion: ACN accuses PDP of plotting to set Nigeria on fire. The party said Mr. Amaechi’s purported expulsion was an attempt to cause anarchy. The Action Congress of Nigeria has accused the People’s Democratic Party of plotting to “set the country on fire” to please President Goodluck Jonathan, in the party’s reaction to Friday’s purported expulsion of Rivers state governor, Chibuike Amaechi, by a faction of the ruling PDP. In a statement issued in Lagos on Sunday by its National Publicity Secretary, Lai Mohammed, the ACN said it was left with no choice than to reach that conclusion after the faction of Rivers PDP reportedly loyal to the president, took the decision at a time Nigerians were suing for peace in the troubled state. ACN said while whatever transpired within the PDP is not its business, its (ACN’s) concerns stem from the dangerous impact that the Rivers crisis can have on the polity, especially its implication for the country’s fledgling democracy, to which most of the rabble-rousers in the ongoing crisis contributed nothing. “Because of the danger their actions pose for our polity, we are concerned that these trouble-makers are hell bent on annihilating Gov. Amaechi. Those who have accused us of crying more than the bereaved do not get it. We are indeed the bereaved once anything happens that can torpedo our democracy and destroy our country,” the party said. A faction of the PDP in Port Harcourt announced Mr. Amaechi’s expulsion on Friday, accusing him of anti-party activities and belonging to the opposition coalition, All Progressive Congress, which is yet be registered as a political party. On the feud between the First Lady, Patience Jonathan, and Mr. Amaechi, ACN said it leaves the case to Nigerians to decide on the appropriateness of the wife of the president, who holds an unelected office, charging a governor against demolishing a riverine settlement in the state. The president’s wife last week cited the exchange, which the governor rebuffed and pushed on with the demolition, as the beginning of a bitter feud between Mr. Amaechi and the presidency that now threatens to tear the state apart. The First Lady said she had intervened and asked Mr. Amaechi to suspend the plan to demolish a part of Okrika, her hometown, or consult with the affected people in an area. “As for the allegation that the Rivers Governor failed to heed the instructions from high (though unelected) quarters that he must halt the demolition in Okrika, we leave Nigerians to judge whether somebody occupying a post that is unknown to the constitution can override one who is a creation of the constitution….r egarding that person’s constitutional mandate,” the party said. “We leave it for Nigerians to determine whether a state Governor, who is the Chief Security Officer of his state, should have no say over the security of the state, just because an overbearing ‘political’ Police Commissioner has assumed extra-powers at the behest of his puppeteers!” -PREMIUM TIMES
