Amazing essay by Traron Edwards. AMERICA? “Murals that salute freedom or death for liberty, be it Inglewood/Englewood or Egypt, Bed-Stuy or Baghdad, Syria or Liberia, the west bank or the west side of Chicago. Where food and liquor stores still occupy the block, while police and community watchmen justify why they shot, Emmit Till & Malice Green, Rekia Boyd and Trayvon Martin. Better not wear that hoodie while shopping for a carton or whatever they selling in your food desert. Cause your soul is dessert and will be dissected.” Ayesha Says On July 13th 2013 we as a nation were all witnesses. Everyone tuned into their news stations waiting on a verdict that would impact the lives of many. This was an opportunity for our justice system to show the world, that all U.S. citizens had equal rights. A chance to send the message that racial discrimination was something that we as a nation had moved pass. This country united to elect an African American leader; sure we would continue this unification right? All God’s children are created with the same opportunities right? When the jury announced their “not guilty” verdict I couldn’t have been more disappointed. A family lost their young child, and the killer gets to return to his life. This child like me and you had dreams, and goals of his own. Like you and me he had friends and those who cared for him immensely. The only difference between him and us is life. We still have ours and his is gone forever. Take a moment to reflect on all the aspirations you have in your life. Now imagine those hopes, those dreams being taken away. Your parents will never see you succeed. They’ll never see you have grandchildren, never hear your voice, never see you breathe again. This is the horrific reality the Martin family has to live with. I’ve been reminded time and time again that God works in mysterious ways. This event as tragic as it is, has brought many of us together. You have every right to feel angry, sad, hurt, whatever emotion is in your heart. However this is our opportunity, an opportunity for us to dictate our own history. Laws won’t be changed just because of our opinions alone. If you want real change YOU have to make the appropriate actions. Everybody wants to be like Jordan or LeBron, but alley-oops and dunks don’t change laws. Real change will come from the future lawyers, judges, district attorneys, etc. of our generation. Trayvon Martin lives through all of us now, let us all carry him in our memories and together we can make this a better country for ALL of God’s children. Thank You, Traron Edwards
