Amazing project, congratulation! to ICD, Stuttgart. HygroSkin - Meteorosensitive Pavilion. The project was commissioned by the FRAC Centre Orleans for its permanent collection and will be first shown in the exhibition ArchiLab 2013 - Naturalizing Architecture opening on 14th of September 2013. The project explores a novel mode of climate-responsive architecture through material-oriented design computation and digital fabrication. It employs the swelling and shrinking of wood in relation to moisture content to construct a meteorosensitive architectural skin that autonomously opens and closes in response to weather changes but neither requires the supply of operational energy nor any kind of mechanical or electronic control. The material structure itself is the machine.
