Ambassador Terence A. Todman mourned by many Todman honored in July by 30th Legislature CHARLOTTE AMALIE, ST. THOMAS - On behalf of the senators and staff of the 30th Legislature, Senate President Shawn Michael Malone has extended profound condolences to the family, loved ones and friends of retired United States Ambassador Terence A. Todman on the sad occasion of his passing. I must convey my deepest condolences to his wife, Doris and his four children, Senator Malone said. I also extend my sympathies to his other family members and his many friends both in the Territory and around the world. Ambassador Todman, a native of St. Thomas, was born on March 13, 1926 and is a 1944 graduate of the Charlotte Amalie High School. His distinguished foreign service career of over 40 years resulted in him being designated a career ambassador by the United States State Department. During his career he led six embassies of the United States and spoke the language of each nation in which he was stationed. He was the Assistant Secretary of State during the Jimmy Carter Administration. Ambassador Todman was also a member of the University of the Virgin Islands Board of Trustees for close to two decades and served on the board of directors of many national and international organizations. He was awarded the Virgin Islands Medal of Honor in 1977. During the last legislative session, Senate President Malones bill to honor and commend Ambassador Todman received legislative approval and has been signed into law by the governor. As a result of the Governors approval a distinguished chair in international relations was established and funded at UVI and the airport access road to the Cyril E. King Airport will be named in his honor. While we had no indication that this bill would become law so close to Ambassador Todmans passing, we take great satisfaction that he was aware of the sentiments of the 30th Legislature and the Virgin Islands community, Senator Malone said. As we pause to honor Ambassador Todmans distinguished public service to the nation we rightfully hold him up as an example to all present and future Virgin Islanders of a life well lived and public service honorably given. The Senate President indicated that the flags of the Legislature, and those at all Government offices throughout the territory, are flying at half staff in Ambassador Todmans honor.
