Ambulance driver’s death sparks violence in Bongaigaon From our Correspondent BONGAIGAON, December 6: The alleged murder of an ambulance driver has sparked off violence in Bongaigaon town with angry people staging a road blockade and police resorting to baton charge, tear gas shelling and finally firing to disperse the demonstrators on Saturday. The Superintendant of Police (SP) of Bongaigaon was assaulted by an angry mob and the OC, Bongaigaon PS also was injured during stone pelting by the mob as retaliation to the police firing. On November 26 when an ambulance (AS–19–C5476) driver named Chiranjib Dey (21), who lives in a rented house in North Bongaigaon with his mother, got an emergency call for ambulance. “Since then, he is missing. Later the kidnappers called us and demanded Rs 60 lakh as ransom. As we could not fulfil their demand, they killed him. His body was recovered on Friday night at Modoti area under Runikhata PS in Chirang district. After postmortem today in Kajalgaon, the body has been returned,” said Dey’s relative. The situation in Bongaigaon town turned violent on Saturday when Dey’s body was brought. Angry people gathered in the main road of Bongaigaon near North Bongaigaon police point carrying Dey’s body. They first blocked the road and started to shout slogans against the police and administration. The protesters demanded immediate arrest of the kidnappers and compensation the victim’s family. The Bongaigaon Deputy Commissioner (DC) arrived on the spot and tried to talk with the mob but failed. Finally the DC left and Abhijit Bora, Bongaigaon SP arrived and tried to talk with them. But the angry mob suddenly became violent and assaulted the SP. The mob also started pelting stones on the police force. The SP had to take shelter at a nearby place. The police was also compelled to resort to baton charge and blank firing to drive away the mob. This worsened the situation. Thousands of people again gathered at the spot. The mob came to direct clash with the police. The SP, Bongaigaon became almost captive inside the shelter. The army was also called in. Finally after more than three hours, the police, with the help of paramilitary forces, started baton charge, shelling tear gas and firing also. The public also pelted stones and bricks in return. Binoy Barman, OC, Bongaigaon PS became injured during the stone pelting. Finally, the police was successful in driving away the mob and clearing the road in the evening. The situation is still tense.
