Amendment Strips Away Essential Conscience Protecting Language SB 330, a bill that provides licensing procedures to genetic counselors, included strong Conference-supported conscience protections when it passed the Senate and House. These protections ensure that no counselor is forced to be involved in counseling that conflicts with his or her religious or moral beliefs. Governor McAuliffe, however, has proposed an amendment that would significantly dilute these protections. Tomorrow (March 6), the Senate will vote on this amendment. Please click here to tell your Senator to vote NO on the Governors conscience-weakening amendment. A genetic counselors religious or moral beliefs shouldnt be the basis of a civil suit; nor should a genetic counselor be forced to directly refer a patient for services he or she finds morally objectionable. Urge your Senator to protect conscience rights and oppose the Governors amendment.
