America - Hes Your President for Goodness Sake! By William Thomas View all articles by this author Share on emailEmail To A Friend There was a time not so long ago when Americans, regardless of their political stripes, rallied round their president. Once elected, the man who won the White House was no longer viewed as a republican or democrat, but the President of the United States. The oath of office was taken, the wagons were circled around the country’s borders and it was America versus the rest of the world with the president of all the people at the helm. Suddenly President Barack Obama, with the potential to become an exceptional president has become the glaring exception to that unwritten, patriotic rule. Four days before President Obama’s inauguration, before he officially took charge of the American government, Rush Limbaugh boasted publicly that he hoped the president would fail. Of course, when the president fails the country flounders. Wishing harm upon your country in order to further your own narrow political views is selfish, sinister and a tad treasonous as well. Subsequently, during his State of the Union address, which is pretty much a pep rally for America, an unknown congressional representative from South Carolina, later identified as Joe Wilson, stopped the show when he called the President of the United States a liar. The president showed great restraint in ignoring this unprecedented insult and carried on with his speech. Speaker Nancy Pelosi was so stunned by the slur, she forgot to jump to her feet while clapping wildly, 30 or 40 times after that. Last spring, President Obama took his wife Michelle to see a play in New York City and republicans attacked him over the cost of security for the excursion. The president can’t take his wife out to dinner and a show without being scrutinized by the political opposition? As history has proven, a president in a theatre without adequate security is a tragically bad idea. Remember: “Apart from that, Mrs. Lincoln, how did you enjoy the play?” At some point, the treatment of President Obama went from offensive to ugly and then to downright dangerous. The health-care debate, which looked more like extreme fighting in a mud pit than a national dialogue, revealed a very vulgar side of America. President Obama’s face appeared on protest signs white-faced and blood-mouthed in a satanic clown image. In other tasteless portrayals, people who disagreed with his position distorted his face to look like Hitler complete with mustache and swastika. Odd, that burning the flag makes Americans crazy, but depicting the president as a clown and a maniacal fascist is accepted as part of the new rude America. Maligning the image of the leader of the free world is one thing, putting the president’s life in peril is quite another. More than once, men with guns were videotaped at the health-care rallies where the president spoke. Again, history shows that letting men with guns get within range of a president has not served America well in the past. And still the “birthers” are out there claiming Barack Obama was not born in the United States, although public documentation proves otherwise. Hawaii is definitely part of the United States, but the Panama Canal Zone where his electoral opponent Senator John McCain was born? Nobody’s sure. Last month, a 44-year-old woman in Buffalo was quite taken by President Obama when she met him in a chicken wing restaurant called Duff’s. Did she say something about a pleasure and an honour to meet the man or utter encouraging words for the difficult job he is doing? No. Quote: “You’re a hottie with a smokin’ little body.” Lady, that was the President of the United States you were addressing, not one of the Jonas Brothers! He’s your president for goodness sakes, not the guy driving the Zamboni at “Monster Trucks On Ice.” Maybe next it’ll be, “Take Your President To A Topless Bar Day.” In President Barack Obama, Americans have a charismatic leader with a good and honest heart. Unlike his predecessor, he’s a very intelligent leader. And unlike that president’s predecessor, he’s a highly moral man. In President Obama, Americans have the real deal, the whole package and a leader that citizens of almost every country around the world look to with great envy. Given the opportunity, Canadians would trade our leader, hell, most of our leaders for Obama in a heartbeat. What America has in Obama is a head of state with vitality and insight and youth. Think about it, Barack Obama is a young Nelson Mandela. Mandela was the face of change and charity for all of Africa but he was too old to make it happen. The great things Obama might do for America and the world could go on for decades after he’s out of office. America, you know not what you have. The man is being challenged unfairly, characterized with vulgarity and treated with the kind of deep disrespect to which no previous president was subjected. It’s like the day after electing the first black man to be president, thereby electrifying the world with hope and joy, Americans sobered up and decided the bad old days were better. President Obama may fail but it will not be a Richard Nixon default fraught with larceny and lies. President Obama, given a fair chance, will surely succeed but his triumph will never come with a Bill Clinton caveat – “if only he’d got control of that zipper.” Please. Give the man a fair, fighting chance. This incivility toward the leader who won over Americans and gave hope to billions of people around the world that their lives could be enhanced by his example, just naturally has to stop. Believe me, when Americans drive by the White House and see a sign on the lawn that reads: “No shirt. No shoes. No service,” they’ll realize this new national rudeness has gone way, way too far. They are driven by self and not the love true true love for people Posted by adeola pollard | November 20, 2012 Report Violation Mr. William Thomas, please understand that the press is not the voice of the people. Barack Obama has dealt with the press by beating them and their follwers in the two elections; taking away 2 Republican senate seats and getting the most votes. Today, we have the Internet for bi-directional communication, the ask no question press is dead. No longer can commentators and the minority control the majority. Posted by Anthony | November 19, 2012 Report Violation Itsimply fair. I a glad that they have honest people that standing still to recognize what type of a great man President Obama is. I salute you with great honor! Posted by Rose Marie Toussaint | November 12, 2012 Report Violation If I were Obama I would of left office after 4 years and then I would have written a huge book explaining my accomplishments and before leaving office I would of made a national televised statement expressing how I felt, especially to all you racist out there. You have to figure that only real people understand that his first 4 years were very rough and that he was able to accomplish so much that racist pricks just couldnt see that. Thats just how I feel personally but Im glad he showed the negatives out there that he can still do it by running a second term. There was a reason why he received the Nobel Peace Prize and by 2016 it would definitely prove why he won it in the first place. Posted by KAI | November 9, 2012 Report Violation Mr. William Thomas, the words you have written confirms what is in the hearts of all reasonable American citizens. In the past, yes indeed, American citizens fell in line, undivided by political affiliation, beside our President and we rallied him on towards bigger and greater things for the Nation. Now all of a sudden this man, President Obama, he can do no right in the eyes of divisive and partisan people. All the good that he has accomplished, the President (Barack Obama) is still called wrong and given negative labels designed to tear him and the country down. I LOVE America and the people in our country who stand on the side of Liberty, Justice, equality and opportunity for all citizens. Thank you for posting your letter. Posted by Dr. Sixela | November 6, 2012 Report Violation I am very proud of our President the Honorable Barack Obama, I live in the Bronx, and no other President or his wife ever thought we deserved a visit, but Michelle Obama came to our borough out of concern for our young people, tomorrows future. This just proves to us that the Obamas are ordinary, down to earth and caring people. Mr. Obama took over office with a lot of problems from Bush. It will take many years to correct the mistakes of the Bushes. I think our President deserves a second term. God Bless our President. Mr. Trump, the worst of them all had the nerve to criticise the President. Look at his track record, robbing the poor to make money. How many times did he not declare bankruptcy. If I did that I could not have a bank account and my credit score would be messed up. But he is up and running, he needs to declare how he got his money, and leave Obama alone. America needs to realise what a great person Obama is. Posted by Lorna | November 5, 2012 Report Violation Look not to our president for the lack of progress in the last 4 years or the fact that we went from AAAA. Look to the congress, they cant, wont, or dont want to work together for the better of our country. Posted by don walker | November 2, 2012 Report Violation With all due respect we can agree to disagree on this article. I agree He deserves respect as the President. So do the people he serves. I d list such disrespect by the President but it would not change a thing. 4 years is all I can take of his time in office. He is no Nelson Mandela. and this is not Africa or Canada or Eroupe for that matter. This is a nation intentionally being moved of its basic founding Fathers foundation. The Constituition As an american this is unacceptable I Can not accept this I pray he leaves office with his health and lives a long life In the private secture after the election. I did not want him 4 years ago and I dont want him the next 4 years. Posted by Kent | November 2, 2012 Report Violation Thank you very much for your article. Maybe we in America will learn from it. I hope so. I am proud of my president and his color does not matter, it is the charter of the man that is important. When will we in America stand behind what we say we are the land of the free and brave. Posted by Anna | October 30, 2012 Report Violation What the second paragraph means Marc potential to become an exceptional President is the fact that if Congress/Senate choose to stop being hateful and start working together with the President for what is best for America we would be in a much better place now 4 years later. But the republicans are more concerned and planned together to stop this President at all cost, to make him look bad, to do things to cause him to fall with the blame from Americans, and their ultimate goal, they cannot let this black man have another 4 years, so lets do all we can to sabotage all his efforts, even if it is at the expense of America! That is what it means. And to Larry about, of course when you look at 4 years ago and now you may not see much betterment. That is exactly what the republicans in congress and the senate wanted. You all missing the real culprits in all of this. They (congress/senate) allowed America to lose its AAA ratings just to make this President look bad and all to make sure he is not re-elected to a second term. Republicans in Congress and the Senate are the reasons for nothing much getting done as it would have been but they stemmied, harrassed, insulted and undermined President Obama on every turn so Nothing got done. Use your commone sense people. But, I say, watch out for that hole that congress/senate is digging for President Obama, they will be the ones to fall in. I have seen it over and over in life. Posted by lavy | October 29, 2012 Report Violation I do not know how old this article is but my comment are 8 days out from the election to either re-elect Mr Obama....The alternative Mr Romney is running on being THE DEFAULT PRESIDENT....if you hate Obama then u vote for Him.....He does not have any detailed plan(s) just vote for him, He does not have to have one, as he says When he is elected he will, reveal it (maybe come up with one)....Herman Cain was leading him because he ha a plan....Perry was leading him because he had a plan....Gingrich was beating him because he too had a plan...now all these candidates did not have the money to continue ..so that left the Default...He lies depending who he is addressing...With current Technology everyday he has to walk back a lie that is pointed out by fact checkers. But still This is close RACE....He supposedly won a debate the President was asleep and lack fire , but the contents of what he said are questionable......he will reveal his plan if elected , he will reveal his taxes when elected....IF you hate the President that badly Romney is your Guy, that is the jest of the Romney campaign...Honesty is not required, providing information to the public is not required, He do not care about 47 per cent, He will create job but Loves to fire people. The government that he wants Is not responsible for creating jobs, his friends are .....How he deals with difficult problems e.g Palestinians and Isreal situation..He kicks the can further down the road so that the next person after him can deal with it. God has helped Obama and is constanly removing the things that the republicans were hoping to use to fuel their hate based campaign..eg the economy and the jobs figures, he dropped it to below the 8 % mark and God continues to help Americans to do the right thing...go out and vote responsibly Posted by glad one | October 28, 2012 Report Violation Hello world. We have a wonderful President. When Our President first got into office, there was a great oil spill. That took the wind out of many people. . Our president worked tireless at trying to get things under control. It seems that noonr remembers that situation.or really...was it planned ??? well when it was under control, time had passed. then to hear members of the congress on TV saying that they were going to block every thing that he was trying to do was terriable. Our country was held hostage by that group of American so called group of Congress Leaders. They are the ones that set the tone for our Great Presidents so called failure. Our President did not fail. He had major setbacks with help from our congress republican leaders. Posted by WMae Jackson | October 28, 2012 Report Violation Many people fail to see the big picture. The previous president and his self serving folks created much of the situations that the current president is now facing.President Obama is doing his best. He cannot do the job alone!!! Unfortunately he is working with folks who would rather die than help him to do a good job. Nothing has changed in America!!!!.Those fact mentioned in this article proves that fact. America you think the economy is bad now, let Senate Romney get elected as President of the USA!!! Nothing surprises me any more. When Mr Bush was re-elected, I realized that people are hopeless!! I am not shocked or surprised when Americans make unwise choices, ( except in electing President Obama) That has become their calling card. Posted by May Hicks | October 27, 2012 Report Violation I was born in 1949 in the State of Texas. I experienced much wrong done to many people. The most happiest day of my life (besides my marriage to my loving husband and the birth of my children & granchildren) was the day that President Barrack Obama was sworned in as the President of the United States. I voted for him, but it was not because he is a black man. I voted for him because his views and plans are for ALL Americans. I work in law enforcement and have had many talks with survivors/victims of tramatic situations (young/old/white/black/rich/middle class/poor) who do not have enough insurance or no insurance to bury their love ones from a tragic offense. I do not see color when I see the sorrow and tears on these people faces because they do not know HOW they are going to bury their loved one. They are so worried about how their child will be taken care of because they do not have insurance or not enough coverage to take care of the hospital or doctor bills. I have actually had to arrest people that committed their crimes because they needed money for these bills. Oh course, you should not take any action that is against the law. But who knows what will happen if they themselves were in a similar situation. Of course, healthcare is not the only important issue that is facing our country, BUT it is a big enough issue that WE should want to come to some agreement concerning a solution to our problem. President Obama is doing everything that he knows how to do to get a solution to this one important issue. He is also taking steps in getting solutions to the other important issues. WHY CANT WE, AS A PEOPLE, WORK WITH AND RESPECT OUR PRESIDENT? WHY CANT WE AS CITIZENS OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA WORK TOWARD BECOMING A UNITED COUNTRY INSTEAD OF ALL OF THE DIVISION THAT WE ARE GOING THROUGH? Please let us be mentors for our young people and give them a positive and good impression of ALL Americans (white, black, young, old, rich or poor). LETS WORK TOGETHER. We can disagreed with each other, but we don;t have to be disrepectful to each other. GOD BLESS AMERICA!!! Posted by LSHAW | October 27, 2012 Report Violation @Smorkmo: If you cannot afford healthcare, it will be given to you by the govt. via subsidies etc. There are a lot of healthcare myths and the President and his party has not done a good job explaining it to him. Posted by Sam | October 26, 2012 Report Violation I love my President! President Barack Obama is a true leader and he will get my vote once again. I cant wait for November to get here. Posted by Daphne | October 26, 2012 Report Violation Every individual posting has the right to say what they want without being disrespectful. Previous Presidents have never been blocked or portrayed in such humilating ways than President Obama. He has done his very best with the lack of bipartisanship across the aisles of Congress. Health care is costly and I personally have health coverage, but health care should be more like Canadas...everyone has the same health care services, thus the reduction of health care costs! Posted by Jenelle | October 24, 2012 Report Violation @Smorkmo this site does not allow vulgarity. Your views could have been expressed without your vulgar markings. Posted by Jenelle | October 24, 2012 Report Violation Many people of the white race never expected to see a black man in the whitehouse. Never forget it was the forefathers of these people who brought blacks to America in chains and expected them to stay that way forever. Many others hold to the fear that one day they will be in chains and blacks will give what they got, hatred, beatings, hangings, rape and more. America lives a lie and fights to keep control of the country and its people, I am ashamed of the behavior but see the reality of fear and hatred. You cant continue to be abrusive and not get your day in the sun. Whites know that and will spend untold dollars to go someplace else, the moon, mars, anyplace that blacks and other people of color wont be, for the moment at least.
