Amid ongoing violence in Kenya, the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi has issued travel restrictions on government personnel throughout the central African nation. A terrorist attack in the coastal city of Mpeketoni, in which suspected al-Shabaab militants shot and hacked to death approximately 50 civilians, has prompted the tighter security throughout the country. Terror attacks by al-Shabaab militants throughout Kenya have increased over the past year, with the most significant being the attack on the Westgate Shopping Mall Complex in Nairobi in September. While most attacks are small in nature (grenade and improvised explosive device attacks), the intent to attack foreigners (missionaries, aid workers, etc.) remains significant, particularly among coastal towns such as Mombasa and Diani.
