---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Les dejo aqui tambien un reportaje del periodico local: Deerfield Beach eaterys Terminator food challenge remains undefeated November 6, 2010|By Ruben Cueto, Forum Publishing Group Mention the Terminator, and the first thing Id think of was the movie role that helped make Arnold Schwarzenegger a star. Not anymore. Now I associate it with the behemoth breakfast challenge offered at Shelbys, 3952 W. Hillsboro Blvd. in Deerfield Beach. The 24-inch pancake (yes, 24 inches), served on an oversized metal tray, is as intimidating as Arnolds killing-machine cyborg character. Our sister Forum publications are preparing a special section on great eats that will be published in December. As ideas were discussed for it, one that came up was doing a food challenge, ala the Travel Channel show Man v. Food; episodes are highlighted by host Adam Richman trying to tackle an outrageous culinary concoction. I never had a chance. Billed as South Floridas biggest pancake breakfast, The Terminator is topped with eggs, home fries, sausage, bacon and toast. Actually, buried is a more fitting description. As owner Erik Brinkmann explained, the pancake carries four eggs, a pound of bacon, six sausage patties, 1.5 to 2 pounds of potatoes and four pieces of toast. Including the tray, The Terminator weighs in at about 8 pounds. Shelbys has offered this no-time-limit challenge for about four years, and roughly 300 people have stepped up to the plate. If you finish it, the meal is free. No ones gotten a free Terminator yet. Everyone has a different strategy; none of them has worked, he said. After the food arrived, I decided to combine some of the elements, making two sausage and eggsandwiches. Within a few minutes, I had pretty much cleared three items off the challenge. Any sense of satisfaction was fleeting, however, as I next tried tackling the home fries. I spent a good five minutes shoveling down potatoes, and there was still a mountain of them left. To break the monotony, I started mixing in the bacon. At about the 30-minute mark, I finally took my first bite of the pancake. The pancake by itself would be a tough challenge — its a thick flapjack that requires about a gallon of batter to make. The story behind it is a funny one. One day, Brinkmann accidentally dropped a pitcher of pancake batter on the grill. Instead of trying to sop it up, he just let it cook. A lot of great people were made by accident. In my case, it was a pancake, he said. Word has gotten out about Shelbys and its signature challenge — the Food Network was recently there for an episode of its new show, Outrageous Food. About 40 minutes in, I threw in the towel. I finished the eggs, toast, sausage, bacon, about half the potatoes and roughly a quarter of the pancake. However, there was still a little more than 4 pounds of food remaining. This was my first time at Shelbys. All the items on the dish were quite good, and I especially liked the bacon. So, to borrow a line from Arnolds Terminator character, Ill be back. But if I plan on ordering Shelbys Terminator again, Im going to need a lot of help.
