Amma or Amachi born on this day Sept. 27, 1953 as Sudhamani Idamannel in Kerala - southern India. (aka Mātā Amṛtānandamayī Devī) Amma, the Hugging Saint, in her rapturous duties of embrace begun in her teens has hugged a total of 33 million people over 30 years - according to her supporting organization - MATH. Thats about a million a year or an average of 3,000 a day. Lets not quibble over the Math, as exuberant as it seems. She is here to heal with love and touch, a calling she felt in her childhood seeing the poverty of people in her region - and began the practice in her teens, continuing despite her parents objection. When she embraces she says: “I don’t see if it is a man or a woman. I don’t see anyone different from my own self. A continuous stream of love flows from me to all of creation. This is my inborn nature. The duty of a doctor is to treat patients. In the same way, my duty is to console those who are suffering.” People used to come and tell [me] their troubles. They would cry and I would wipe their tears. When they fell weeping into my lap, I used to hug them. Then the next person too wanted it... And so the habit picked up. She can continue for 20 hours in one day. She promotes chanting as a way to embody a meditative practice recorded more than 1,000 bhajans in 35 languages and setthem to traditional ragas. Regarding devotional singing as a spiritual practice, Amritanandamayi says, If the bhajan is sung with one-pointedness, it is beneficial for the singer, the listeners, and Nature as well. Anyone care to share any experienced with Ammachi?
