Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as Lou Gehrigs Disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. The reason for the ice bucket challenge is to bring about awareness. The cold ice on the neck/ spinal cord affects the nerves and gives the brief feeling of what lou gehrigs disease is like.
