An 18-year-old man’s life was saved by East Peoria firefighters at a house fire Dec. 23 at 223 Meadow Ave. Firefighters responded to the scene just before 5 a.m. to find the first floor house fully engulfed in flames. Witnesses reported that a person was still inside the home. Firefighters went to the back of the residence where the victim was laying on the floor in heavy smoke, unconscious with his body blocking entry to the back door. Firefighters ripped the door off the hinges, carried the unconscious man to a stretcher and performed CPR. He was transported to OSF Saint Francis Medical Center, and later transported to the Regional Burn Center at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield. A friend of the victim escaped the fire, and two other residents were not at home at the time of the blaze. The fire engulfed both floors of the two-story structure. Assistant Fire Chief Ryan Beck estimated that the house is a complete loss. Fire investigators from the East Peoria Fire Department and Illinois State Fire Marshal’s office are searching for the cause of the blaze. The Peoria, Northern Tazewell and Creve Coeur fire departments assisted East Peoria in containing the flames. The Morton Fire Department sent an ambulance and the Germantown Hills Fire Department temporarily manned East Peoria’s Fire Station 3 during the event.
