An 87 year old woman called Valerie, who started work at the UN in 1947, asked Malcolm Fraser and the panel whether we could live without war. I met up with her afterwards and she asked me and David Marr, who was standing next to me, the same question. I said yes and David said a resounding no! There was the beginnings of conflict! Malcolm Fraser was adamant that being in lock step with the USA is hazardous for our future. He is concerned about a newly belligerent and re-arming Japan provoking China into conflict and then dragging the USA into it with Australia hanging on to its coattails. So many fascinating conversations at the Writers Festival - met up with Tim Flannery and his new baby, Candida Baker who is doing exciting things, Antonia Case and Zan Boag, publishers of the fast selling new Womankind and NewPhilosopher and a plethora of other great friends. The joy for me is meeting up with friends, some of whom I see only at the Writers Festival! Sadly its coming to a damp close for another year.
