An Akitas Determination with Love and Patience One week ago, Zara came home from the hospital paralyzed from the neck down after being diagnosed with a rare cervical ligament/spinal condition. The swelling around her spinal cord increased after a spinal tap attempt, paralyzing her. Since no one has seen a case such as hers before, a recovery was unknown. She was prescribed high doses of steroids for the inflammation, antibiotics and pain medications. Weve been doing rehabilitation exercises and massage therapy several times a day. We are on our second harness that finally fits her needs. Most of the time, I am lifting her up on her legs and shes been able to stand with the assistance of the harness and my help holding her up. Throughout the week, shes been gaining her strength and the movement in her limbs and usually crawls around. I usually have to carry her from room to room or outside. While going outside today, she attempted to walk while I assisted her in the harness. I was extremely proud of her. After being outside for a little while, I stood her up and she just took off wanting to walk. After about 20 feet, she laid down. She then stood up on her own (wobbly a little but she did it all by herself) and stared to stumble and then walk. Once she started, she didnt want to stop. She walked to the corner of our street, did her business. I totally expected her want to come back home but no, she turned down the street we usually walk on our daily walks and kept going. Below is a video where she stopped half way down the street to take a break. She gets up and starts to walk home. Sorry the video turns sideways but my neighbor was filming and didnt know how to work my phone. None of her previous accomplishments or awards compare to today. Ive never been so proud of my Zara than this moment.
