An American author and investigative journalist says US President Barack Obama and German Chancellor Angela Merkel are trying to escalate the crisis in Ukraine. “Basically Obama and Merkel are trying to increase tension,” said Wayne Madsen in an interview with Press TV after the two Western leaders described the Russian move to send humanitarian assistance into eastern Ukraine as dangerous escalation of the conflict. “They (Obama and Merkel) are saying that Russia had no right to send humanitarian supplies into the besieged people in eastern Ukraine who are being starved just like the Israelis starve the people in Gaza and basically the authorities in Kiev and those in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem are no different.” Madsen added that the White House and its European allies want to impose more sanctions on Russia to pressure the country over its position regarding the Ukrainian crisis. “It is obvious that the Obama administration is looking to increase sanctions on Russia,” he said. The American investigative journalist said that Western sanctions on Moscow have had a devastating effect on farmers and fishermen in Western Europe due to retaliatory Russian embargoes on European products. The West and Russia have been at loggerheads over the political situation in Ukraine since pro-Western forces toppled Ukraine’s pro-Russian President Viktor Yanukovych in February 2014.
