An Austin, Texas company claims it can almost recreate the famed 1911 pistol designed by John Browning on a 3-D printer. The company, Solid Concepts, created almost all the parts of the gun via direct metal laser sintering (DMLS). It could not, however, print out the recoil or firing springs. According to Phillip Conner, the DMLS project manager, the company was “trying … to dispel the commonly held notion that DMLS parts are not strong enough or accurate enough for real-world applications.” A video posted on the company’s official blog appears to validate the company’s claim that the printed gun is sturdy and accurate. The company insists that the gun — test-firings of which can be seen in the video below — wasn’t machined. In response to criticism that alleged that the gun was machined, Solid Concepts posted a video that explained how direct metal laser sintering technology worked.
