An EFDA is an Expanded Functions Dental Auxiliary. That means a dental professional that can place fillings (restorations) after a dentist prepares a tooth. Admission to an EFDA program requires that applicants show proof of acquiring the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) certification, OHIO CDA the Ohio Certified Dental Assistant, or Ohio licensed Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH). To perform expanded functions under the direct supervision of a licensed dentist in the state of Ohio, a dental assistant must qualify as an Expanded Function Dental Auxiliary (EFDA). To qualify as an EFDA, one must: (1) Complete an EFDA training course that is accredited by either the American Dental Associations Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) or the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools Higher Learning Commission AND (2) Pass the EFDA exam administered by the Ohio Commission on Dental Testing (OCDT) AND (3) Hold a current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification AND (4) Apply to the Ohio State Dental Board for registration as an EFDA.
