An Eater Message from RR+Rs Chaplin Gary Raymond. When we think of Easter, it’s a distressing story of someone laying down their life for others like Jesus did. Crucifixion is a form of slow and painful execution in which the victim is tied or nailed to a large wooden cross and left to hang until dead. The length of time required to reach death could range from hours to days depending on method, the victims health, and the environment. A literature review by Maslen and Mitchell identified scholarly support for several possible causes of death: cardiac rupture, heart failure, hypovolemic shock, acidosis, asphyxia, arrhythmia, and pulmonary embolism. Death could result from any combination of those factors or from other causes, including sepsis following infection due to the wounds caused by the nails or by the scourging that often preceded crucifixion, eventual dehydration, or even animal predation. Legs were often broken (Jesus legs weren’t broken) as an act of mercy to the tortured person by hastening death through severe traumatic shock and fat embolism. Why would Jesus go through this for you and me? The answer is, He wanted to and needed to for the purpose of taking God’s anger for our sin on Himself. We all sin against God however, Jesus took the blame on our behalf so we could go free and end up with God for eternity. He then rose from the dead. How amazing. He showed us He was God the Son. Talk about Risk, Response + Rescue. God took the Risk we would place our trust in Jesus by faith and repentance, God initiated a Response to our sin by sending Jesus and God performed a Rescue when we were hopelessly immersed in our sin. How good was that. Trust this Easter you allow the Risen Jesus to rescue you.
