An English 18-pounder produced between 1693 and 1722 arrived at Fort Moultrie today after being transferred from Timucuan Ecological & Historic Preserve. The cannon was found in a vacant lot outside of Jacksonville in 1988 and has been on loan to the Jacksonville Historical Society since 1993. It was on display at the citys Southbank Riverwalk, but when the city decided to upgrade the park, the cannon no longer had a home. In November 2013, curators at Timucuan and Fort Moultrie, began working with historians in Florida and South Carolina to determine if cannon like the 18-pounder were used in the Charleston area during the 1700s. Initial findings lead curators at both parks to determine Fort Moultrie was the appropriate place for the cannon. The park hopes to have the cannon on public display by the Carolina Day celebration this year.
